What merging two kits does to the matches

When you merge two kits of the same person, the matches, shared-match links and segments of the merged kit move to the surviving kit, so every engine reads them as that person's matches once - the branch engine, the kit bridges and the cousin search included. If the same match was already on the surviving kit, that row is kept and only filled in with what it lacked - a note, a group label, a haplogroup; the second copy is marked as a duplicate, never deleted. Unmerge moves everything back exactly as it was. Nothing is deleted, and the merged kit keeps its raw file, its consent and its person link.
